Great Planned Parenthood Graphic Shows 97% of Their Services Are NOT Abortion-Related

Ezra Klein, ThinkProgress, and others have run this graphic today in an effort to debunk the GOP-created myth that not only is Planned Parenthood performing abortions with government funds (that has been illegal for decades with the annual renewal of the Hyde Amendment), it comprises the majority of their activities.

Hell, to hear Republicans tell it, you'd have to conclude that PP hands out abortions the way politicians toss candy at the crowd in a parade.

The actual truth? Abortion makes up a whopping 3 % of the healthcare services Planned Parenthood provides, as shown below.

As you, and anyone else interested in facts instead of rhetoric, can see, abortion is a minuscule percentage of the many health services PP provides to women. In fact, fully 86% of the care they provide relates to contraception, STD testing and treatment, and cancer screening. In other words, they make the women they service healthier. Moreover, most of the women served by PP are poor and without resources to get healthcare of any kind elsewhere, as Klein notes.
About 80 percent of Planned Parenthood’s users are over age 20, and 75 percent have incomes below 150 percent of the poverty line. Planned Parenthood itself estimates it prevents more than 620,000 unintended pregnancies each year, and 220,000 abortions. It’s also worth noting that federal law already forbids Planned Parenthood from using the funds it receives from the government for abortions.

So though the fight over Planned Parenthood might be about abortion, Planned Parenthood itself isn’t about abortion. It’s primarily about contraception and reproductive health. And if Planned Parenthood loses funding, what will mainly happen is that cancer screenings and contraception and STD testing will become less available to poorer people. Folks with more money, of course, have many other ways to receive all these services, and tend to get them elsewhere already.
What's the intent behind this? Well, it sure LOOKS as though Republicans want every constituency that tends not to vote for them to be as unhealthy and as poor as possible. Keep those low-income people low-income by making them get sicker and sicker - possibly even dying - and scraping to afford even rudimentary health care. Keep them as miserable, poorly nourished, and distracted as you possibly can so they don't have the energy to follow politics and vote... for Democrats.

I could be wrong about the objective. But you have to admit, that's how things look.

The positive take away here is that without contraception or abortion, more Democrats can now be born.

I just think they hate women and are pissed off that they can't control them anymore.

I'm so glad to see this pie chart explain it so clearly. This is about denying women health care because Republicans hate women. Period.
